I can't really comment because I've only experienced the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, friend codes get really annoying since you must have a code per game... but hey, that's a good excuse for a nice friend code system on site. 
If you had like, a Mii code for all your Nintendo games, that would be so, so much better.
