So it has now been 2 months since the Punch-Out!! remake was released.
Not just does it play like the original it also betters it in just about every way.
These days’ people go on about the "good old' days" when games were simple and harder.
So what we are going to find out is this.
How do the fighters in Punch-Out!! Compare now as to when they were new 15/22 years ago.
First off Glass Joe:

Possibly the most well known of the punch-out fighters Glass Joe was also one of the easiest.
He had a week jaw, slow punches and his attacks didn't deal that much damage.
In the original Punch-Out Glass Joe had two attacks that could be dodged easily.
In Punch-Out!!
Wii Glass Joe is more or less the same, the only difference is that he will pull poses so that you can punch him and get a star.
Comparing the two versions I would have to say the new version is the easier one.
So in comparison these two are pretty close but they pail in difficulty when compared to the new version of Glass Joe in title defence on punch-out
wii. Normally it would be harder to lose to Glass Joe as apposed to beating him. Here it is the other way around. This version of Glass Joe is tricky, for starters he has head protection so blows to the jaw won't work anymore unless it is a star punch, to make things worse he pulls slow punches that messes up your timing, for example normally you are suppose to dodge when you see him preparing the hook, but here he pulls slow hooks.
It is now possible to be beat by Glass Joe.
So in order of difficulty (RED Hard, Green Easy) :
Glass Joe B (Wii) Glass Joe (NES) Glass Joe A (Wii)
Ok next opponent, Von Kaiser.

Also known as the German Steel Machine Von Kaiser is arguably easier than Glass Joe.
Von Kaiser is pretty easy to counter, he has two main punches, the first is a straight jab, he shakes his head when he does this punch, the other attack is a hook from the side, this is easy to dodge because there is a small delay when he charges the punch.
In the
wii version he has a 3rd punch, this time he does a hook from his left side as opposed to his right, with this punch the timing is slightly different and it does a bit more damage.
The
wii version of Kaiser also has several poses so it is easy to get a star against him.
In all I'd have to say the NES Von Kaiser is the easiest, he is really predictable and he can be TKO'd in less then a minute.
As for the title defence version on the
wii, well he is pretty easy too, he does pull fake punches but you can't take any damage when he does them so there is nothing to worry about, he also has a quick jab where he shouts just before making the punch. The only dangerous move he has is the rush attack he does, this attack can be avoided easily.

Piston Honda (Hondo)

Let's start off with the early versions first, there isn't that big a difference with the two versions of Honda(Hondo).
In the NES version he still does that thing with his eyebrows and he still does that charge move. Out of the 2 the
wii version is the easiest, in the
wii version you can beat him to the punch easily, he also leaves himself valuable on purpose so that you can get a star.
Now the World Circuit versions are pretty close too but when it comes to it the
wii version is harder.
In the NES version you can read is move fairly easily he does that thing with his eye brows only difference being that he does three punches as opposed to one, he still does the change and uppercut as well.
The
wii version is much harder this one tries to trick you into thing that you can get stars from him, for example he will do the eyebrow thing only to block and counter punch, same goes for the bow pose that he does, it is there to trick you.
So:
Piston Hondo B (Wii) Piston Honda B (NES) Piston Honda A (NES) Piston Hondo A (Wii)
Don Flamenco

Just like Honda(Hondo) there are 4 versions of this guy.
Right off the bat I will say that the NES Flamenco is the easiest, you get a lot of counter punches against him so that he will go down quickly.
The
wii version of Flamenco is harder, this time it takes a lot more punches to take him down, to add to that he has a few new punches that he will use against you, like that one where says "uno, dos, tres" and take three swings at you, to add to that he also gets more aggressive when you knock off his wig.
Same goes for the world circuit versions, the world circuit Flamenco is still pretty easy to beat in the NES version you just need to know how to make him expose himself.
In the
wii version he pulls some tricky double punches to throw you off guard, there is also the "uno, dos, tres move as well this time he counts up to seven and punches you from both directions making it harder to dodge.
In all:
Don Flamenco B (Wii) Don Flamenco B (NES) Don Flamenco A (wii) Don Flamenco A (NES)
Next up is King Hippo.

This guy is pretty big and he has a tough defence to boot, but once you figure out his weakness he is pretty easy.
You only have to knock king hippo down once to win.
I'm not sure which version of him Hippo is harder they are both really easy and they can both be Ko'd in the first round.
I'll put the
wii version down as the easiest purely because you can counter his normal punches.
As you would guess the world B version of him on the
wii version is much harder.
His punches are harder to counter and he has a manhole cover taped over his belly to protect him which you have to knock off.
King Hippo B (Wii) King Hippo (NES) King Hippo A (Wii)
Bear Hugger.

Now Bear Hugger was never in the original NES Punch-Out instead he was in the SNES game Super Punch-out.
I'll get straight to it, Bear Hugger on super Punch-Out!! was easy and you could beat him in less than a minute. All you had to do was punch him, dodge his counter and then give him the ol' one, two. He was that easy.
Now the new Bear Hugger has been completely revamped, he has a new move set that is harder to predict that alone makes him the more challenging of the two.
The world B version of Bear Hugger Wears a cap which has a squirrel hidden inside, this may not sound like a problem but that squirrel can make Bear Hugger delay his punches so that you will mess up your timing. Saying that though he does pose a lot, so you do get a good amount of stars against him.
Bear Hugger B (Wii) Bear Hugger A (Wii) Bear Hugger (SNES)
Now on to the last opponent in this part, Great Tiger.

Great Tiger is the son of a famous Indian magician and a master of magic which he will use to try and throw you off guard in a fight.
Now in the NES version Great Tiger has three moves he will use against you.
1) A straight jab. This can be countered for a star, if you see the jewel on his turban flash then punch him.
2) Upper cuts. He will use plenty of these against you, nothing special. Easy to dodge, easy to counter.
3) Teleporting. His last move is his magic, this move may look dangerous but trust me it is nothing to be worried about, all you have to do is block constantly, if you block all of his punches he will be stunned, this will allow you to knock him down in one punch.
Now the
Wii version is slightly different.
1) His turban now has two colours Red and Yellow, if it is red dodge other wise he will counter, if yellow punch him and get a star.
2) His upper cuts are different. This time he uses odd timing to throw you off guard, each side has its own timing, kind of like Von Kaisers Hooks.
3) His magic is different. This time he will spilt into two and make a clone of himself, each will attack you individually in an attempt to trick you, one does no damage, the other does.
The World B version isn't too hard, this time his turban shines in different colours, Red, Blue, Green, and White.
Each colour is for a certain type of punch.
Once you learn the pattern he shouldn't be too hard.
Also this time his magic attack is like the one in the NES version the only difference being that you dodge as oppose to blocking.
Great Tiger B (Wii) Great Tiger A (Wii) Great Tiger (NES)
That’s it for now see you next time when I go over the last few fighters.
